I agree that NYC is far more fast paced than any city in the country. People are in a rush to get wherever they are going. You can sit in a Starbucks in New York and just see the differences between tourist and city dwellers.

I think fast paced has several meanings. I equate it to the mood of each city's CBD. When I was in Chicago, I thought the vibe of the city was fast paced. The east coast has a different mentality - It's a get the f*&k out of my way attitude which starts with NY. When I was at a conference in Minneapolis, people looked at me crazy because I was jay walking. If you ever ride the DC Metro, stand on the left side of the escalator or take a long time to enter or exit the fare card gates and see what happens.
