I keep reading on the news about the severe heroin epidemic (such as teachers getting caught shooting at school) and it seems like it is very much centered in the northern states. I'm sure you can get heroin down south, but it doesn't seem like its a big problem in the parts of the south I have spent time. Southerners seem to prefer their weed, meth and cocaine products. I'm guessing its not an availability issue as the Mexican black tar heroin has to pass through the south to get north.
Living in Northern cities is bleak. When crammed on public transportation headed back to your small, extremely expensive apartment, freezing your face off, being rude to surrounding people or generally receiving that treatment from your neighbors, heroin seems like a better alternative. Research SAD, seasonal affective disorder. It's the condition people get when they realize they live in Minneapolis and escape is unlikely.
Oxycontin and the other opioid narcotics still flow freely in the south. In northern states, they've gotten more difficult for addicts to obtain illegally/shadily, so they turn to heroin to get that similar fix. It will happen soon enough in the south once the states down there exert more pressure on the pill mills and doctors in general.

Exactly. Isn't Florida still the "Pill Mill" Capital of the World where Doctors fill prescriptions in warehouses and take cash only?

Although I'm sure a lot of heroin enters the US from Mexico, the bulk of the heroin found in the New England states comes in through the smaller coastal fishing ports. Gloucester and Fall River are huge ports of entry for dope in MA.

Anyone have any idea why this might be the case?
The quality is high (dangerously so) and the price is cheap.

The southeast has more weed ,crack ,pain killers other pain meds and very little of any meth or heroin. Most meth is on west coast. Most heroin in northwest and northeast.
