If your husband was open to going back to MI, I would suggest suburbs like Royal Oak, Berkley, Birmingham, Rochester/Rochester Hills or Farmington/Farmington Hills. public transportation would be an issue though.

I thought about the Cleveland metro, but weather during the summer and the perhaps the winter would possibly be an issue there. Same with Pittsburgh, but would fit otherwise.

With the sports criteria and some may challenge this, but passionate sports fans tend to be more visible on the East Coast or eastern portion of the country, generally. So, that may also be something to consider.

I'd definitely suggest looking into Seattle or Portland...both check all the boxes.

Seattle would beat Portland imo on a number of those points particularly the sports mentioned. Portland's only current sports edge is NBA, tie on soccer, but come in behind on baseball and football (Seahawks and UW).

My first thoughts were Seattle and Denver. But after thinking more I feel like you have plenty of options. No reason why San Fran, Boston, NYC, DC, etc don't fit the bill.

She said she really dislikes humid heat so that would pretty much rule out Boston, NYC and particularly DC. Boston summers may not be as hot and humid compared to much of the US but it most definitely is compared to Scotland. SF would be an option.
