Stuff I just learned: The modern day state abbreviations were created and issued in 1963 by the USPS when they implemented the 5-digit zip code system...although many of the abbreviations were derived from those that had been in use for many decades prior. The only change to the modern abbreviations came in 1969 when Nebraska was switched from NB to NE at the request of the Canadian government.

California has been CA for years but I continue to see the old version, Calif., quite a bit.

I hate that Maine is ME. All the touristy stuff w "I love ME" on it.

It was cool in an ironic sense back in the day but I'm over it.

Another M state would have to change to make it something else though. ...??
