Philadelphia - High density of bars in a small geographical area. You can get NYC-quality cocktails at Baltimore prices, and without the NYC attitude. Great dance clubs, dive bars, sports bars, and gay bars, too.
Between the cheese steaks, the roast pork sandwiches, and 13th Street Gourmet Pizza, no city beats Philly in terms of late night drunk dining.
Some other suggestions out of left field: Louisville, Minneapolis (particularly Nordeast), Oklahoma City, and Saint Louis.
You bet - and I'm not a smoker. There should be an additional license or something like that, and a sign/name designation, so people who don't smoke can stay away if they'd like. There are places in Wisconsin out in the sticks where they absolutely allow smoking, and people throw cash into a jar that pays the fines if anyone happens to wander in. It's very common.
Thirded, totally! I guess that's why I like going to bars on the Indiana side of the border, since as I'm an infrequent off and on smoker(have never smoked daily in my life, and I intend to keep it limited to just when I drink, or socializing with others who smoke), it's nice to have a few bars like that. And even on the Indiana side, I see more bars than I suspect which chose to voluntarily ban smoking. Which to me is definite proof that owners will respond to demand and pressure for being non-smoking inside, if enough customers demand it.
Also, it isn't just only in Wisconsin where some bars will look the other way on smoking inside. I know of a few bars in the Chicago area that do the same sort of thing, and have smoking fine jars where those who smoke donate a little money into them, to help that bar pay for any fines due to breaking the smoking ban.
I love going to the bar at the top of the Needle (aka Tower of the Americas) in San Antonio and having a few drinks with my sweetie at night - or to watch the sun go down.
New Orleans is really the king of this thread. It covers almost all the categories, you can drink at any hour, and there's an open container law so you can get a to-go cup or just walk around drinking your own stuff.
And yeah, if you're a smoker, smoking in a bar is the ultimate.
-Gay bars: Atlanta, fun and friendly gay nightlife. I like Denver as well for this.
-Hotel or Casino bars: Vegas, I don't really like res casinos or AC.
-Resort bars: The bar in the lava cave pool at the Hyatt in Maui
-Video bars: Seattle had some good ones back in the 2000's
-Hodown/Country bars: Truth or Consequences, NM. There sure are some interesting characters in that town.
-Piano bars: Ogunquit, ME
-Hook up bars/Meat Markets: These places are everywhere.
-Local dive bars: Durango, CO
-Good conversation bars: Southern cities where there is less ice to break, and they strike up interesting and hearty conversations in cities like Austin, San Antonio, Nashville, and Atlanta.
-Hood & ghetto fabulous bars: Baltimore
Ha I literally was just at the Hyatt last week, kind of cool but would like a little more sun and view of the ocean which just a few feet away were spectacular. Just wish the beach were a little better right in front of the resort as a little way down closer to Black Rock its amazing
Japenga above the cave bar had a cool and chill HH hour with the torches and some chill live music. Maui is very chill
