Tri-state is also used in the Philly area to describe Philly - Delaware Valley is also used

Same thing with Cincinnati, but it's most common for the NY/NJ/CT area.

The Boston MSA doesn't have a fun nickname...

Just "Greater Boston".

That's ok. I think some of the names are kinda dumb. "DMV," "Hampton Roads," "triangle/tripod/triad," etc. might be appreciated by locals, but I'm sure most outsiders will say "why don't you just tell me the metro/city you're talking about?"

True, although, people refer to the area west of I-95 as "Metrowest." Right?

The Willamette Valley refers to more than just the Portland area, and really when people say Willamette Valley around here they're referring to areas south of Portland like Salem and Eugene and Albany or the McMinnville/Newberg wine country--and people don't refer to the Clark County or Washington County suburbs as Willamette Valley. There's really not a good second name for the Portland Metro--people in the Clackamas or Washington County suburbs will just say they're from Portland.
