What are some real life designations of metropolitan areas that don't quite involve the name of the city within the area? For example, I live in the Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, CT Metro Area, but in real life, people and locals refer to the area as "Fairfield County."

Other examples would be Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, CA, but in real life people call it "Inland Empire."

Or Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, VA-NC, but in real life people call it "Hampton Roads."

Any others you can think of?

Minneapolis-Saint Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI; Twin Cities

Davenport-Moline-I'm Sure Some Other Cities Go Here, IA-IL; Quad Cities

If any other Midwestern cities want to follow a theme here, the Tri Cities title is still widely available. Midland, Bay City and Saginaw, I'm looking at you guys.

Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA = "Southern California" or simply "SoCal"
San Francisco–Oakland–Hayward, CA = "Bay Area" or sometimes "NoCal" (mostly a play on "SoCal" if used. Edit: on second glance, "NorCal" seems more common)
San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, CA = "Silicon Valley"
Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, AZ = "Valley of the Sun"
Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO + Colorado Springs, CO + Fort Collins, CO + Boulder, CO + Cheyenne, WY = "Front Range"
Salt Lake City, UT + Provo-Orem, UT + Ogden-Clearfield, UT = "Wasatch Front" or "Zion" (common moniker among Mormons)
Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI = "Twin Cities"
Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL = "Tampa Bay"
Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, VA-NC = "Hampton Roads" or "Tidewater"(?)
Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX = "The Metroplex" or "DFW"
Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD = "Delaware Valley"
Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV = "National Capital Region"?
Pittsburgh, PA = "Western Pennsylvania"
Charlotte–Concord–Gastonia, NC-SC = "Metrolina"
Raleigh, NC + Durham–Chapel Hill, NC = "Research Triangle"
Boise, ID = "Treasure Valley"
Huntsville-Madison-Decatur, AL = "Tennessee Valley" or simply "The Valley"
Kennewick-Richland, WA = "Tri-Cities" (Pasco being the third)
Florence-Muscle Shoals, AL = "The Shoals"
Logan, UT-ID = "Cache Valley"

The Norfolk/VA Beach area is beginning to adopt the moniker "Coastal Virginia", a far more descriptive name than Hampton Roads or Tidewater.

Bay Area refers to every county on the Bay including Santa Clara County and San Jose. Silicon Valley refers to the Santa Clara Valley but also other adjacent areas with high numbers of tech companies/workers including the southern Peninsula in San Mateo County and sometimes Fremont in southern Alameda County.
