Chicago actually is more like 2nd tier imo. There are certain gayborhoods but the overall place I think has a lower proportion GLBT ratio, and the city just gives off a real frat boy vibe.

I think DC has more presence?
Well he did say that Chicago is in there by sheer numbers only, not per capita.
Even beyond Boystown, Chicago's LGBT community seems more organized than the LGBT community in DC. Chicago-based Howard Brown is the leader in LGBT health services in the country, and is a model for smaller organizations. The Broadway Youth Center is is a leader in advocacy for homeless youth. Also, considering Chicago's huge dyke march, lesbian roller derby, gay beach volleyball leagues, numerous print publications, LGBT political influence, and bathhouses (if that's your thing) Chicago trumps DC. Not that DC is at all shabby.
I'm a little surprised by how low you ranked Boston. On the same level as Columbus and Orlando?
I'm guessing that P-Town and Northampton don't count toward Boston's ranking?
Both are a two hour drive away. Boston does have a great gay scene particularly if on is college-aged and progressive politics, but the nightlight life is a little sleepy.
Columbus, imo, has the most underrated gay scene in the country.
Orlando has one of the highest percentages of LGBT people per capita. Why? I have no idea.
There's absolutely no reliable statistics available that show the LGBT population of any place in the U.S. It's very hard to measure. Therefore, the best statistic IMO is simply the total population of a city, multiplied by say, 5%. In conclusion, NYC has the highest number of LGBT residents of any city in the nation. Bottom line....the more populated an area, the more LGBT people there are. The less populated an area, the less LGBT people there are. There may be a few exceptions or inconsistencies, but in general, it really is that simple.
