In terms of politics, climate, geography, culture, religion, etc. try to pair each state with a polar opposite. For example, Washington and Mississippi, one is in the northwest and is liberal, cold, a less religious, and Mississippi is in the southeast, hot and humid, conservative, and extremely religious.

Nevada and Virginia - NV (occasionally politically conservative but has liberal laws) vs. VA (occasionally politically liberal but has conservative laws) + Harry Reid (D) Majority Leader, Senate from NV vs. until recently, Eric Cantor (R) Majority Leader, House from VA. Opposites.
