When you ask a southerner something, and they evidently can't hear you, and they say "Do what now?"

I'd much prefer "Pardon me", or "come again", or something normal.

Hah, do they actually say that? I've never heard that phrase in my life.

I usually just say, "sorry?"

I've never heard that. I always say "pardon me", but that's a personal preference.

Yes! In the deep south. Usually the uneducated (read: Redneck) class.

I've heard "say what now?" up here. Normally people just say "sorry" or "excuse me"

I've heard this before, except I can't put my finger on when or where. Probably in St. Louis since I grew up in that area, but then again my family did take a lot of vacations to the Gulf Coast. Anyway most people just say "excuse me," "pardon me," "come again," or just, "Sorry, I didn't catch that," even in St. Louis.

Yes, and a lot of Scandinavians, including many members of my extended family, mumble.

Re: do what? Yes, people say that in the south. My brother moved to Florida and used to say that mockingly (to mock the Floridians). It's better than "Huh"?
