Well, lets see....the LEAST well known WOULDN'T be known, now would it? So how can anyone say what the least well known would be...if no one's ever heard of it.

Most well known would have to be NYC The next five might be....(not necessarily in any order) L.A., Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Miami

Sadly, you seem to be misunderstanding the least well-known. IMO I doubt many foreigner would have heard or Kansas City before.

Most large U.S. cities are also well-known internationally, at least in the English-speaking world (if there's a song about it, we've heard of it). I would guess they became well-known for being regional hubs, or for having historic, economic, or cultural importance: Boston, New Orleans, El Paso, Santa Fe, Dallas, Austin, Salt Lake City, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Portland, Seattle, etc.

But there are quite a few big cities that are, weirdly enough, not well-known internationally, and I have no idea why. Fresno, the "Inland Empire", Long Beach, Jacksonville FL (although Orlando is well-known for obvious reasons), Oklahoma City, Wichita, Mesa, Virginia Beach, Colorado Springs, Tulsa, Omaha... I'm looking at a list of the 50 largest metropolitan areas in the U.S., and I didn't know those cities are as heavily populated as they are.

If you really want to mess with a foreigner... ask them which state KC is located in.

Some of those actually are well known, for reasons connected to mass media:
- WKRP in Cincinnati
- Nashville - epicentre of the country music scene
- Memphis - Elvis
- Indianapolis 500
- El Paso - at least one really famous song about this one
- Cleveland - Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
- Milwaukee - Happy Days, beer
- Albuqurque - Bugs Bunny always needs to turn left there

Seriously, American pop culture has a pretty long reach. TV shows get syndicated internationally, the music goes internationally... you might be amazed at how much foreigners do know about the U.S., but also, how many holes we have in our knowledge.

Hollywood may be the most well-known, and it's not even a city.
