I can't speak for other Northeastern cities, but I do know that Pittsburgh has an emerging gaming design industry, and it's possible to buy a house there even with a not-so-great job, though a few city neighborhoods have become more expensive than before. It's also very laissez faire in terms of religion and religiosity, and has a very strong sports culture. Some people will say that you'll be ostracized if you're not a fan of the local teams, but my personal observations would suggest otherwise since I saw a fair scattering of other sports logos throughout the city when I was there earlier this month, primarily of New York, Philadelphia and Chicago sports teams, but also including out-of-state colleges like Ohio State, West Virginia, Syracuse, Maryland, Michigan and Notre Dame, among others. (I even saw one guy in a Stanford t-shirt.) More people have been moving to the Pittsburgh area since about 2000, so I doubt you'll have trouble finding a niche even if you're not a fan of the Steelers, Pirates or Penguins.

Honesty sounds like Richmond, Virginia is perfect for you. Plenty of gamers, the city itself is very secular, and more importantly it's the fastest growing city on the east coast.

Not sure of the Video Games aspect but otherwise the DC area would fit the bill. It has the strongest, most diverse economy outside of the NYC area and while the cost of living is considered high, so are salaries....and jobs are fairly plentiful for those with any kind of skill set.

This. And OP, I definitely recommend Alexandria, Virginia It's made up of several neighborhoods so see which one you would like. The most popular nabes in Alexandria are Old Town, Shirlington, and Del Ray.
