I am not sure... but I think it depends on the switching. Cause some stations have platforms on the outside of the tracks while others have the platform between tracks.

The purple line only runs express here on weekdays during rush hour. It'll go express from Howard down to Belmont, and then it starts making stopping at the same stations as the brown line before entering the Loop. The line typically runs from Howard (Chicago) to Linden (Wilmette) via Evanston.

Yes and no for Chicago. From Belmont to Howard there's the second track that the purple line runs express on during rush hour, but, once you go south of the Belmont stop, the purple line shares tracks with other lines that aren't running express.
