Most of my favorite city names are California cities--Playa Del Rey, Rancho Santa Margarita, Aliso Viejo, Altadena, Rancho Cucamonga, San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles.

Favorite:

New Orleans, just because it has a nice sound.
Duluth, because it's fun to say.
Detroit, because it's actually a really beautiful name

Wait... all these names have something in common. They're all French! Well, I guess they say French is a beautiful language, and apparently I'm a fan.

Least Favorite:

Anything with a St. in it. It just sounds provincial to name your city after a certain religion's figures (no offense St. Paul or St. Louis).

I love the sounds of Northeastern cities with a Native American name: Poughkeepsie, Punxatawney, Pawtucket, Schenectady, and Woonsocket.

Other cities of Native origin are cool, don't get me wrong, but they just don't roll off the tongue like those in the Northeast.

The native American city names in Wisconsin take the cake, I think. Could be some folk's least favorite due to difficulty or favorite because they are fun. Oconomowoc, Menomonee Falls, and Ashwaubenon come to mind.

Personally I hate names of places that are somewhat misleading. For instance, if they have "Hill/Mountain/River" in the name and they are NOWHERE near a hill, mountain, or river.

As far as favorites, I really like names like Chattanooga, Albuquerque, Tuscaloosa, Talladega, Orlando, Milwaukee, Chillicothe, and some of the ones Fezzador mentioned.

Truth or Consequences, NM.

Honorable mention to Knockemstiff and Kinnikinnick in Ross County, Ohio. They're merely villages, not cities... but fun names!

Weed, New Mexico and Weed, California. You gotta appreciate a town named after a generic term for an unfavorable plant.
