I live in a small NJ town across Hudson river called West New York and I hate to explain people over and over it is actually in New Jersey. Even my HR believed I made a typo on my address and withheld NY state tax rate.

Haha, that reminds me of the town "Jersey Shore" in the middle of Pennsylvania-although "West New York" actually makes sense given its location.

Like:

Coeur d'Alene is a really pretty name - I'd never heard of it before seeing it mentioned somewhere here and I looked it up purely because the name was so intriguing.
Philadelphia - I really like the meaning ("city of brotherly love") too.
Minneapolis
Milwaukee
Atlanta
San Francisco
Detroit

Dislike:

Louisville
Jacksonville
Jackson
Tampa

I think I like the ones I associate with good, and don't like the ones I associate with indifference.

I like bigger or more established places too.

I like place names that end with ia. There's a certain grace that the ia sound lends.

My favorites: Juneau, AK; Spokane, WA; Sacramento, CA; Baton Rouge, LA; Natchez, MS; Augusta, GA/ME; Romulus, MI

This is totally illogical, but I don't like it when towns and small cities are named after big cities: Moscow, ID; Dublin, CA; London, ON; Rome, NY; New Philadelphia, OH; Berlin, NH; or Cairo, IL.

For some reason it doesn't bother me when the city is bigger than the older city which it's named after: New York, NY; Syracuse, NY; Portland, OR; Halifax, NS; or Memphis, TN.

I have no idea why.

Others I dislike: Norman, OK; Gary, IN; Reston, VA; Tampa, FL (sounds like tampon); San Diego, CA (I think sandy ego); Blythe, CA; St. John, NB; St. John's, NF (nothing against St. John, but two capital cities with almost the same name is a little confusing).

Love and hate simultaneously: Bullhead City, AZ
