No, I meant that I was "throwing out" Asheville and Portland, as my original suggestions to you based on what you wrote in your original post, which did not include anything about them being lesser known cities. I hope that clarifies things.

And don't get too caught up with raw city population numbers. TC anchors a metro area of 150k and definitely feels larger than 14,000.

I'd definitely add Traverse City to that list. Technically it only has 14k people in it. But that has more to do with Michigan's impossible annexation laws. It has an urban area that exceeds 60k people, a metro area like mentioned 150k, and amenities of a city six times its size or more.

Bangor Maine is fairly nice, not run down, no ghetto areas, easy to get around in.

I did not know that Traverse City has a deceptive population number, thanks for clearing that up guys.

Very beautiful, I didn't know Bangor was above 30k, you learn something new every day.

Hilo, Hawaii
Cedar Falls, Iowa (though it's adjacent to larger Waterloo which many consider to be a dump)

Glens Falls, NY is like this too. It even has suburbs surrounding the city of about 14,000.

I love Kalamazoo! I went to college there, great town.
Marquette is another Michigan college town between 20k and 90k worth discussing here.
