I dont think most people think of cities when they think of Connecticut, they think of wealthy suburbs instead. Cities there, like Bridgeport, New Haven, Hartford, New London, are old cities that are revitalizng themselves, but have still mostly seen better days. Stamford is now essentially a business outpost of New York City so its doing a little better, although outside the Northeast and New England I don't know how many people know that or think about it at all.
But I suspect that for most people Connecticut means images of suburban wealth: Greenwich, Darien, New Cannan, Westport, and the like. Even if they don't know those names or specific towns the Connecticut "brand" is that whole Kate Hepburn/John Cheever/Yale sort of thing (even though Yale is in New Haven). IIRC Connecticut is still among the wealthiest states in the union, by household income.
I can't stand when people think CT is just a "suburb of NYC." Most of it isn't like that.......except for the area near NYC. Ever since I moved down to Fairfield County from Hartford County, I am appalled that New Yorkers think that Connecticut ends after Fairfield County. To them, it's like Hartford doesn't even exist, yet it's the largest metro area in the state.

Hartford Metro area has over 1 million which is largest...but after Westport it does'nt feel that fairfield county anymore.

Yup, I agree. In fact, the only Fairfield County feeling towns I would say would be Greenwich, Stamford, New Canaan, Darien, Norwalk, Westport, Wilton and Ridgefield.
First thing that pops in my head is a Jerry Seinfeld quote, "Ah! High finance! Bulls, bears, people from Connecticut . . . " Of course, I live on the west coast so Connecticut doesn't really come up much, ever.
