The West to me feels the crunchiest and most introspective. An optimist would say it's a region comprised of free-thinking, laid-back individuals open to new ideas. A cynic would say it's a region comprised of pretentious, insecure people who are overly self-conscious about the image they're projecting.

The Northeast to me feels the most straight-forward and established. An optimist would say it's a region comprised of genuine, boisterous straight-shooters who are good-natured but not fake. A cynic would say it's a region comprised of overly brassy, class-oriented conformists who rarely think outside the box.

After living in the PNW for several decades I would have to go with the bolded. I see people trying very hard to conform to what they perceive as nonconformity. In other words, it has the reputation of the former but in reality is more the latter.

I have never lived in the northeast so I can't talk about that region but I am back in the midwest after many years and I would say that the description here of the northeasterners is more like what they are; the good description that is minus the boisterous.
