Maryland fits nowhere. It's a state no one wants. People in the South don't want it. People in the Northeast don't want it. It's a poor middle child that is hated by everyone and yet wishes it had an identity. As a result, some Marylanders consider themselves Southern and some consider themselves Northeastern.

Linguistically, it's a cross-roads. It fits in with Philly linguistically but that's not saying much because Philly's linguistics are Midland. Culturally, it exhibits Southern and Northeastern culture due to its location. Demographically, it has its share of White ethnics but nowhere near the level Pennsylvania has. Politically, it's also a mixed bag. The Whites of Maryland are less than half Democrat, and its Blue State classification comes from the number of non-Whites in it. This is also expected in parts of the South that are non-White.

So, I really don't think its fair to say it's "fully" in any region. Then again, it's a BORDER state like Delaware, Kentucky, and Missouri, all of which are questionable as to what region they belong in.

Just place Maryland in the Northeast.

Delaware doesn't border a southern state and Delaware was originally a Middle Colony, later a Middle State, currently a Mid-Atlantic State and a Northeastern State. So how can Delaware possibly become a border state instead of staying as a Middle State/Mid-Atlantic State?

No.

How about "Just place it in the south"

What is your logic for this? I am not even discounting the diluted Southern-ness of Maryland. But even some people consider Virginia to be too dliuted Southern and think it should be in the Northeast. I feel like you are one of these people.

Actually, more people consider Virginia a southern state than West Virginia and Maryland.

Doesn't matter what people think. Southern states are southern states and northern states are northern states. It is a matter of objectivity and not the number of people that "feel" it.

You even said that VA and WV should be annexed by the Northeast.

I was just saying that Virginia is considered southern more often than West Virginia and Maryland. However, West Virginia sometimes could be a southern state, while Maryland is rarely a southern state, mostly claimed by southern expansionists as a southern state.

Southern expansionist? Have you not been through us with the entire thread. Maryland has screamed southern since it's founding and just recently started to identify as northern. You won't win this muppet, you can't say that it's "only southern expansionists" who add in Maryland.

Yes, today they have more ties with the north than they do the south, but they still have ties with the south. History presents us with a southern Maryland. Northern states don't have southern history, northern states don't have references in their state songs such as "the northern scum". Northern states were the first to abolish slavery, Northern states don't try to "secede from the south"

Maryland Trying To Secede From The South

At best you can give Maryland an identify crisis. They want to be northern but didn't make the cut. The state of Maryland is mid-atlantic and southern because of it's History. Northern characteristics can be found in many of the states surrounding us but it does not mean that those states are in the northern region. If Maryland wants to be apart of the northern region then they would need to vote to secede from the south. It's been done before and most recently by Missouri moving from the Midwestern Region to the Southern region.
