I've been to Austin several times and given my experiences there were always very positive, it's second only to Madison, Wisconsin. Truly a wonderful place and, by nature of its size and layout alone, doesn't tend to get as overwhelming as Milwaukee. In other words, Madison (and Austin, to a degree) are very walkable. Never been but can imagine Boston, Atlanta, Nashville, and of course Honolulu would be very enjoyable places to visit.

Madison gets my vote. Great college town atmosphere and very beautiful down by the bike paths near Lake Mendota.

My favorite state capitols that I've visited are Denver, St. Paul, Madison, and Des Moines. I think Madison is a trifle overrated and I have encountered a few too many very stuck-up Madisonians, so that has tarnished its reputation for me I think (this is coming from someone with several dear friends from Madison), but it's a very nice city - a bit like a smaller Minneapolis, and Des Moines is a bit like a smaller St. Paul. I would really like to visit Austin, Montpelier, Annapolis, Sacramento, and Boston, and I'd like to spend more time in Indianapolis, Nashville, and Columbus.
