I almost never go to gas stations, but I've never felt in danger anywhere in my town, no matter what time I was out. Downtown can get kind of rowdy late at night, but those people usually aren't dangerous, just obnoxious.

Sure, people can go for a walk, jog, or just about anything at any hour of the night here. In our small city of 50,000 the weekly crime report in the paper is mainly identity theft attempts, with an occasional DUI or maybe a kid stealing beer from the grocery store, a noise complaint or unlicensed door-to-door sales person. Sometimes it will show a police call or two where they knocked to remind someone to shut their garage door. Neighborhoodscout shows us as an crime index of 86/100, and it's almost all property crime.

You guys are all lucky! I guess I'm just paranoid or something. If I ever wanted to go to a gas station for a midnight snack or beer or something the 2 closest to me are so-so, they've both been robbed multiple times but we aren't really in a horrible part of town. Kind of though. I just feel nervous pumping gas or getting out of my car at any location in this city past about 10 o'clock. Yikes for me.

On occasions I feel unsafe outside of gas stations late at night. Especially when I'm alone and filling my moped up, and some shady people walk near me. I'm not afraid because I don't make myself look vulnerable. I'm a fit 6'3 20 year old guy that people don't really see as vulnerable. I do look silly on a moped though.

I'm totally fine in Chicago going to a gas station or a store at 1am, I never even think twice.

The closest gas station to our house (Shell) is open for gas 24/7, but after 11pm no one is there and the little store is closed. They just leave the pumps on, and you have to use a debit or credit card.

Maybe you should have stayed in NJ where you don't have to get out of the car when you get gas.

I live outside of the city. The area is quite safe and I have no qualms leaving the house at any time of day or night. That said, my night vision isn't what it used to be, so I might be a danger to others if I'm driving.

We don't have Walmarts here and I normally wouldn't go to a gas station, but at 1am its perfectly fine to be walking outside.

In Cincinnati where I lived last year? In the neighborhood I was in -- I would probably avoid it if I can.

In Cupertino/San Jose where I am living now? Heck, I could walk to the gas station at 2am with 100 dollar bills attached to my shirt -- and I would not feel unsafe at all.
