Minneapolis hip hop scene is alternative rap, underground rap, and conscious rap. Atmosphere and Brother Ali are hip hop artists that come to mind

Don't forget Mac Miller, I think he is putting out much better music than Wiz Khalifa right now.

Today's Wiz music is a product of mediocre mainstream music. Before 2010, Mac Miller was not making better music then Wiz Khalifa. I've yet to hear anything from Mac on par with Kush and OJ.

To the posters who mentioned Cleveland? You forgot to add "MGK".

To be honest, Wiz all day over Mac.

Breakdown.....

Wiz has a better catalog of music, his older mixtapes are crazy good and his newer stuff is dog poop...obviously the commericalism is getting to his music. Anyways, Mac Miller, to me, completely overrated. It seems like every so often, a label or a crew will try to market this average rapper. I think he spits average, he has good beats but nothing I can say amazed me. He is only getting attention cause Wiz broke the door down in Pittsburgh. Both of them however spit nonsense sometimes which can be disappointing though.

As a underground hip hop head, their are some cities that need to be mentioned.

*Raleigh/Durham = 9th Wonder, Phonte, Rapper Big Pooh, Rapsody, and etc.

*Newark = Redman, Fugees, The Artifacts, and etc.

*Nashville = Young Buck

*Chattanooga = Isaiah Rashad

*Fresno = Planet Asia & Fashawn

*San Diego = Nick Cannon

*Fayetteville = J.Cole

When I think of San Diego rap I think of Mitchy Slick and Jayo Felony, there's been a big gangsta rap scene in SD for years. They have some underground rappers as well, not as familiar with that scene though.

I'm not really that into hip hop, but because nobody has talked about Boston I might as well throw in a little blurb.

The biggest rapper to ever come out of Boston would be Guru.

Other artists that made a splash over the last decade or so were Benzino, Esoteric, and 7L.

Boston's modern hip hop scene probably isn't as big as those in similar sized cities, but it does exist.

Modern local artists include Akrobatik, Reks, Dutch Rebelle, Retrospek, and Michael Christmas.

I loved rap in the 80s/90s when it was dominated by NY, LA, and Oakland. Also liked the Geto Boys from Houston. Lost interest over a decade ago when Atlanta took over the hip hip scene. The ATL/dirty South/crunk sound doesn't appeal to me all. Maybe I just got too old to like that type of music. However the entire genre started losing popularity right around that same time period.
