Yeah, 500-750 a month is hard to do in those cities.

But,
1) wages tend to be higher in big cities, so a comparable job will pay a little more. It's hard to know your true budget is without have a job yet.
2) you can live care free - this also helps to offset some of the higher COL.
3) you can usually find cheaper options in big cities if you look outside the trendy areas- if you move to DC, look for short term group shares in College Park, Falls Church, Wheaton, etc. These aren't exactly ideal from a hip city living perspective. But, they allow you to get a place cheaply, get a job in the area, and then in 6-mo or so find more what you are looking for.
