Well, ok, you said that we had chains the south didn't. C'mon someone find one! I grew up in downstate NY, never saw Bruegger's Bagels until moving up here. They're in upstate in a few spots, I thought they were a New England / eastern upstate NY. Perhaps they skipped over the NYC area because they couldn't compete with local delis and bagels?
Bruegger's Bagels started near Albany, but they're now based in Burlington, Vermont.
Off the top of my head I can think of local store chains like Stop & Shop lol. I'm trying to think of actual restaurant chains that aren't in the south. As I said earlier, chains aren't really hot where I grew up so I'm not familiar with a lot of them.
I've never heard of Bruegger's Bagels. We do have a Bertucci's in CT but it's only "meh"
I think there are less. Maybe Dunkin' Donuts, but that's in parts of the south. Carvel is limited to the NYC region.
There are Carvel's in Upstate NY as well, as there are 2 in the Syracuse area.
As for chains, I prefer local and regional chains like Jreck Subs, Tully's, Brooklyn Pickle, Zebb's, Gannon's Isle Ice Cream and Alto/Otro Cinco, among maybe a few others. A few of these places listed only have 2 locations too.

I'm at Chipotle every Thursday with my coworkers like clockwork. That's a chain I'll always be able to get down with. Chicken burrito bowl every time.
