Off topic, but the most interesting area on that map is the "Driftless Area" where Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois meet.
German and Scandinavian farmers, with a strong socialist tradition. They put Obama in the White House, by giving him a victory over Hillary in the almost all-white state of Iowa in the 2008 primary season.
You were doing just fine until this bit of misinformed stereotyping. That stereotype is in reality such a tiny minority up here. I saw more of those types in your neck of the woods (the Southwest) when I lived down there than I ever do up here. If you must stereotype the PNW, try the urban stereotype of the North Face clad Seattleite or the rural PNW Carhart clad lumberjack types in the mountains. The "hippy-dippy", "albino reject from the mountains of Jamaica" thing belongs in Northern CA much more than it does in OR or WA.
Fair enough, I was 'projecting' from down here where dreads are de rigeur for a certain set. I am totally aware of the 'proper' stereotypes you mention.

Northern Great Lakes, for sure--lots of people who vote Democrat for labor and historical reasons, but really are very conventional/traditional folk at heart.

How are people on the west coast any less "conventional/traditional" than people in the rest of the nation? They live their lives virtually the same as anyone in the rest of the nation. Eat, sleep, work, play, raise families, etc. You're creating an illusion that doesn't really exist. Please explain in detail and give specific examples to support your claim.

Why shouldn't that not count as a plus for political liberalism? Is the question on political conservatism or cultural conservatism?

More individualistic, less valuing of social norms
“Established social norms contour the experience of the self in Boston,” wrote the study authors. “The lack of association between these factors and self-satisfaction in San Francisco suggests a self that is relatively less bound by a concern with status and established social norms.”
Folks from Boston are also more likely to report higher levels of happiness if they’re not aggravated by life annoyances such as demanding in-laws, a long commute, or a tough boss. On the other hand, those from San Francisco were more apt to say they needed to have fun and novel experiences in order to get a happiness boost.
Note that both Oregon and Washington retain the death penalty while most of New England has abolished it. Gives a hint on a historical cultural difference.
