I am currently living in Mexico, and have for the past 4 years. I do like it here, but...I've been looking at Zillow and Trulia and have found some inexpensive little homes on 1/2 to 1 acre, simple little homes in the country...that I would like to buy, and have a garden. Then, when the leaves fall and the wind chills, I can "fly south" with the birds... I've been looking at more rural communities in NC, VA, TN, KY, AK, WV, and IN...and am amazed at the many little homes in the country for sale under $50K on 1 acre. I grew up in VA, spent 20 years in Maine, then 4 in Oregon, before moving to Mexico. Can you think of some small and pretty little towns that I might like? Main criteria is the weather...I do not like humidity or high temperatures....and I want to have a garden. I'm a single woman, 64, have rehabbed over a dozen homes, and am quite independent and no not require employment. So, if something comes to mind, please tell me...thanks. I plan to do a 3-month drive around the country this spring.

I would recommend the area around the Tri-Cities (Johnson City-Kingsport-Bristol) in the northeast tip of Tennessee. You can find quite a number of properties in your price range, have the climate you're looking for and be fairly close to shopping and other conveniences. I think you'll find the towns of Jonesborough or Elizabethton nice places to be close to.
