Along with the explosion of the 'new south' has come the transformation of these two mid-sized metros with some of the most interesting and successful urban renewal in the country.

What city or cities are best positioned to be the next to join these two, or already in the process of doing so?

From what I hear, Winston-Salem is in this category. I've never been there. Perhaps Fayetteville as well.

Shouldnt Birmingham be aiming toward being the next Charlotte, Austin rather than the next Greenville or Chattanooga?

Well the way I read the original post, this thread has to do with downtown revitalization and investment in particular, not the relative standing of the city/metro overall.

I think the OP is talking about the metro as a whole.

I doubt it since he mentioned urban renewal. That's what Chattanooga and Greenville are known for; outside of their downtown areas, it's just typical suburbia for the most part like any other similarly-sized metro area.
