Gonna be taking 16' Budget truck with double axle car hauler. Just wanting to hear from folk who have maybe made this trip across MT into SD and into NE. Making sure that This will be a safe route to take concerning driving conditions and gas. I will get approx 9-10 mpg...
I took I-80 moving here and have no interest in taking that again. Was wondering if this route thru MT and SD is fairly scenic?
I drove from Bellingham to Nashville, TN a million years ago and chose to go this route:
Down I-5 to Portland
East on 84 through Idaho and into Utah
Then East on 80 through Wyoming, and Nebraska
Then, I believe I went south on 29, and across Missouri, into Kentucky and down into Nashville.
It looks like you could go south from Kansas City to Arkansas.
Another time I drove from Bellingham south on I-5 and just took I-40 across the southern states. Really, I think this would be the easiest, least stressful way to go. It's boring, but easy.
When I went the way I did the first time around, I had only ever seen CA, OR and WA, and wanted to see more of the country. But, with the trailer, etc., I'd take the easy route.
Any route with truckers will have truck stops as far as gas goes. If you meant roads that would eat more gas, that would be mountains, and going the way you mentioned would have plenty of that, with curvy mountain passes. You'll have to keep time of year in mind weather-wise, too. Beautiful, but might not be so fun to drive with the trailer, etc.
Plus, much of the "scenery" across the northern route isn't interesting. While driving across Wyoming for instance, I came up with the term, "Why oh Why Wyoming" Booooring, until you get to the far east side. Same with Nebraska. Big fields with rows of trees between the fields. On and on. In my opinion, once you get east of the mountains, it gets boring really fast.
Hope you have a nice trip, whichever way you decide to go.
