Much discussion has taken place on Deep South States. Deep South states almost always include Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, with Texas, Florida, and Arkansas rarely being included. However, it is more interesting to understand which cities represent a true gateway. Which of the cities best represents a gateway to the Deep South?

Well it really depends on how you define the Deep South. Instead of thinking of the region as consisting of entire states, I think of it as a geographic/cultural region, largely corresponding to the Cotton Belt that stretches from eastern NC down through most of SC (all of the state except the Upstate), northern Florida, central and southern GA and AL, all of MS, western TN, southeastern AR, all of LA, and eastern TX. With that in mind, I think some gateway cities would be Raleigh, Charlotte, Greenville, Atlanta, Huntsville, and possibly Houston.

Tupelo Mississippi, Montgomery AL, Macon Ga, Columbia SC. All of the state of Louisiana is the deep south.
I do not consider western Tennessee, any part of Tennessee or North Carolina the deep south

Why not? Memphis is nicknamed the Capital of the Mississippi Delta and it doesn't get any more Deep South than that. Eastern NC also exhibits practically all characteristics of the region.

I chose Memphis. But it depends on which direction you are coming from. Coming from Florida, I would say another worthy gateway to the Deep South is Savannah, GA.

Northern FL is Deep South; with that in mind, Daytona, Ocala, or Jacksonville might be considered gateway cities. Savannah is firmly within the region and not near the border.

I consider those areas the South but not the Deep South. Jacksonville, FL is not as Southern as Savannah, GA.

If were were looking for a gateway to just the regular south then all of those areas qualify, sure.

Actually Cincinnati would be a true gateway to the South. These other choices are asinine.

??? Cincinnati borders Kentucky, which is vastly an Appalachian culture, not a Deep South culture.
