do you mean small or mid-sized cities that are actually suburbs of multicultural big cities or as in separate autonomous small/ mid size places such as Cleveland, Salt Lake City, etc.

There are small cities surrounding L.A, San Fran, Seattle, Chicago, New York City, etc. that have proportianately high Asian populations. As I live in Washington state, there are some small cities not considered within the Seattle metro that have pretty small Asian populations but relative to other parts of the U.S., have higher proportion.

Oklahoma City has a surprisingly large Vietnamese population. Outside most of the big cities (San Fran, DC, NYC, etc.), I haven't seen a lot of small or mid-sized cities with significant Asian populations. I wonder how much of an issue this is for most Asians, though--I have a lot of Asian friends and they're all married to Caucasians and live in predominantly white communities. I have never heard any of them express a strong desire to have more Asian friends, marry other Asians or live in Asian communities.

Huntsville, AL has a large Asian population (mainly Japanese and Chinese) due to the high-tech industries located there, many of them with either NASA or the U.S. DOD (Department of Defense).

Mobile has a large Vietnamese and southeast Asian population that migrated there after the Vietnam War. They like Mobile and the Gulf Coast due to a similar climate as what's found in Vietnam, also Vietnam was ruled by the French up until the Vietnam War; the Gulf Coast still has a lot of French speaking people. In many ways Mobile, New Orleans, and the rest of the Gulf is reminiscent of home.

The Pacific Northwest has fairly large Asian populations.

How about Portland and Tacoma for mid-sized cities?

Any Asian sect. in particular?
Fort Worth and Arlington would serve vietnamese people well, although you seriously can't tell where fort worth end and Dallas begins... other then the skyline... but you can see the Dallas skyline well into Arlington.

Asians tend to cluster is a couple of states.
California (big time)
New York
Texas
Hawaii (also big time but Hawaii is too small)
maybe Washington, Alaska, and Florida...

Asians like big cities... they like to be around 'their own' so a a result the Asian population vanishes as soon as you get out into the country.

but in terms of what?

if you're Chinese NY and San Fran
if you're Japanese LA
Korean- LA and NY
Filipino- San Fran
Vietnamese- San Diego(and OC), Houston, and DFW
Cambodian- LA and Seattle
Lao- San Fran, Minneapolis, and Dallas
Thai- LA
Indian- NY, LA, Houston, and Dallas
etc....

This link from the 2000 Census might help ID some areas where Asians are living in large numbers and growing fastest.
