Why is the Midwest a standard? I don't live in the Midwest nor care that much what their perception is. No one confuses Italians as hispanic, I've occasionally done the reverse: assume white hispanics were white non-hispanic and Italian.
Hispanic is used to group all people of Latin American heritage because they shared some cultural similarities and are usually recent immigrants.
They always confused me as Italian here in NYC.. Even Italians think I am Italian lol or else they think I am Albanian.
You misunderstood me. I am not discounting Spaniards as European. They are. Not Mestizo. Just pointing out differences in perception. Your statement of "no one confuses italians as hispanic" is very absolute. There is no unanimous opinion on what Hispanics look like as evidenced from this thread, and this includes whether Mediterranean Spaniards are thought of as "White" or not. You can go back and see how not everyone has this perception.
I meant "no one here". I probably did misunderstand you; missed the context. I was saying not everywhere was the "Midwest perception" you mention

Let's not call it Midwest. We can call it Susan if that makes you happy. All I know is that there isn't actually an agreed upon perception of what Spaniards or "Hispanics" look like.

Is there an agreed upon perception of what Black people look like?
Latinos and Hispanics are mostly of mixed races except for a few countries like Spain and Argentina that is mostly white thats why on US Census it says White non hispanic.

Would you consider Diego Maradona or Juan Martin Del Potro (both "favorite sons" of Argentina) to be White?
Yes I would most of Argentina has European ancestry such as German and Italian. I am Syrian and German I consider myself white even thou I am mixed like most Latinos are and I am Jewish as well.

But what about Maradona and Del Potro, specifically? I would not consider Maradona "white" at all but Delpo is more of a borderline case.
