Boone was an extremely laidback place until it became Trendy in the late 90s. Boone has become the typical sprawl town. I LOVED the Blowing Rock/Banner Elk/Boone trifecta. Breaks my heart to see what happened.

How about Knoxville??? We have 6500 foot peaks very close by, and we also have water recreation on multiple TVA lakes surrounding us. Hiking, rock climbing even snow skiing are available. Hunting and Fishing are available.
If you like a cold climate then Minneapolis or Green Bay have lots of outdoor activity as well. Lakes unending through all of MN, Wi and MI, a frozen outdoorsmens paradise. Is it cold up there YA youbetcha lol.

Not to forget Knoxville has a huge network of mountain biking trails, right in town and more nearby.

The biggest question is how important are skiing and winter sports to the OP. If that is important he needs to look further north. The skiing in Gatlinburg is sporadic.
