While looking into other states to move to, I keep noticing all the grumbling about Californians. I notice it from people from Texas, Oregon, Colorado, Washington, etc.

Why does it seem like Californians are universally hated? Do they really behave differently, or are people worried about their cities becoming flooded and overpopulated by Californians?

Just wondering. Thanks!

No.

But those that do hate California do so because you guys are the popular kid on the block who gets all the attention and they are secretly jealous of that.

I find that people who hate others based on where they used to live aren't really worth knowing.

We bring money (thus increased housing/etc costs) and a temperament that the rest of the country fails to understand.

People usually hate Californians because of California politics. everywhere I go i meet somebody who complains about California being too politically liberal. Californians tend to think they live in the best state which is fine because California one def one of the best states but Texans, NYers also have a similar claim.

That is such a misnomer.

A state that voted down gay marriage twice, and once passed a proposition that wouldn't have allowed illegals to receive any type of social services?

Depends on what kind of Californians.

If it's the stereotypical, stuck-up, airhead, OVERLY liberal ones, then yes.

Other than that, no, they're just like anyone else.

Wow, will you look at that sunset!

It's nice, but the sunsets in California are GORGEOUS.

Mmmm. I love this weather. My favorite time of year.

Yeah, but you know in California it is always like this.

Oh, look at that waterfall. Spectacular.

I take it you have never seen Yosemite Falls?

Let me tell you about this nice little restaurant I discovered last weekend.

All the restaurants here taste like they serve canned dogfood. Nothing compares to Californian food.

Ad nauseum.

Granted not all Californians are like that, and it is an attitude not exclusive to Californians, but it is pretty darn common.

Granted, I'm not in the West, so Californians are a novelty here. But I think the hostility to them in other parts of the West is because they essentially gentrify entire states. They move there, property values rise, and all the sudden housing is unaffordable and the local culture begins changing.

A similar dynamic happens in the east, particularly in Vermont with New Yorkers, and New Hampshire with Massh*les.

+1. I ripped on a coworker from San Diego for 15 minutes at a restaurant when we were in Spain for work for doing this. He did it for MONTHS all over Europe and I had had enough. It seems that no Californian can appreciate a place without comparing it to something they have in their state. I'm sure even the dingiest cow pastures of Fresno next to a highway McDonalds are more bucolic than the ones here in Nowhere, Oklahoma but we don't need or want to hear about it [sarcasm].
