I am 62, unfortunately single (widowhood but I believe that there is another great love somewhere) who moved from CT to Las Cruces, NM almost 5 years ago. It was a good move then but it is time to move to an area where there is more to do and much less open space.
In my mind, there are three components to finding that 'perfect' place: affordability, lifestyle and weather. If I have to compromise on one, then weather is to be sacrificed. I am retired so I have to consider price and lifestyle. I enjoy city rhythms and what they have to offer.
I would recommend checking out large college towns which are beacons for retirees who want to stay active versus laying around by a pool and whatnot. Cities like Durham NC (Duke University and University of North Carolina nearby), Lexington KY (U Of Kentucky) and Columbia SC (university of South Carolina) would provide a low cost of living, plenty to do in terms of a social life/things to do, a moderate climate and if needed top quality medical facilities.
