I was wondering about this the other day: When is a City a 'City'? So What population does a City have to have in order to be classified as a City? Sometimes you will hear a Town of say 10,000 or 15,000 Peoples be called a City. But to me I don't think of any town with a Population of under 100,000 as a City.

I came to this conclusion and I broke down City and Towns in too different Categories and IMO this is what I call a Large, Medium and Small city as well as Large, Medium and small Town. Here are my Classifications:

Very Large Cities (Megacity) Over 2 Million:

Cites Include
New York City
Los Angeles
Chicago
Houston

Large Cities- 1-2 Million:

Cites Include
Phoenix
Philadelphia
Dallas
San Diego
San Jose

Medium Size City- 500,000 to 1 Million:

Cites Include
Indianapolis
Jacksonville
San Francisco
Charlotte
Austin
Detroit
Memphis
Seattle
Denver
Washington D.C
Boston
Nashville
Baltimore
Tucson
Fresno

Small City-100,000-500,000:

Cites Include
Kansas City
Virginia City
Atlanta
Miami
Minneapolis
New Orleans
Lexington
Anchorage
Cincinnati
Greensboro
Orlando
Madison
Reno
Birmingham
Little Rock
Jackson
Topeka
Fargo
Billings

Large Towns: 50,000-100,000

Medium Size Towns: 15,000-50,000

Small Towns: 1,000-15,000

Sorry, I thought you had seen this one. It's easy to miss with so many threads and the rotate so quickly.

how many people make a city a "city"?

That's probably why no one responded to your thread. They had already posted about it on the earlier one.

I feel like people's views on what's a town and what's a city are different depending on where you come from. I would call 50,000 to 100,000 a small city, being from a place with that population. And I definitely wouldn't call any of those "small cities" small.

Considering Virginia City's population is probably less than a thousand, you may want to remove it from your list. It might make small town, village, hamlet etc.
