I'm looking for a place that is safe, fun, diverse, and not ridiculously expensive. I work from home as a writer so I can take my job with me anywhere that I go. Any suggestion?

I would recommend NYC and the suburb of Sunnyside in Queens. It doesn't get any better as a writer than the NYC area in my opinion, with a ton of opportunity nearly at your doorstep.

I'd think that major college towns would work.

A favorite of mine that may also work and is in the NYC metro is Nyack NY(and vicinity). Nice, diverse village with nightlife and is 20 miles outside of NYC in Rockland County. Village of Nyack | Official website for the Village of Nyack

What do you do for fun? If you're into rodeo, the answer is likely to be pretty different than if you're into lobster trapping.

River North area in downtown Chicago might suit you.

Seattle is currently the best city in the US. That would be a good start.
