I have heard of this term when I was looking at pages about NJ, DE, MD and PA. Usually just Mid-Atlantic, no specific state or other region. Although, sometimes, I would hear "Northeast and Mid-Atlantic". There are articles about "Philadelphia to become the Mid-Atlantic hub for", "Washington is the Mid-Atlantic's best city", etc. The term was likely created from the Middle Colonies.

New York, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Northern Virginia.

I think Maryland is the ideal or first state people come to think of when they hear the term mid-atlantic. Although it is very hard to distinct this region

Why just Northern Virginia? I've seen people putting the whole state of Virginia in the Mid-Atlantic.

Because that's where some people have arbitrarily decided it should end.

This thread should be closed. We already had a similar one not that long ago. Mod, please close.

I think this map is the best. The shaded dark red being the "core area" Problem solved.

Because the south truly starts when you hit Richmond. Northern Virginia and up is the epitome of mid-atlantic culture. South west Virginia is as southern as Alabama or Missouri. Very distinct southern accent and culture. Northern Virginia is much like Northern New Jersey.
