I thought so too but I see it in print as Washington and I see lots of references on here to the Boston-Washington corridor. That's what led me to ask.

In B.C. Canada most would think of Washington State, since they are our neighbours.

Where I live, I genuinely hear both DC and Washington in conversation to refer to Washington, DC pretty equally. Also - the football and baseball teams are both referred to as "Washington"- the Washington Nationals and the Washington Redskins. And hockey - the Washington Capitals.

I understand what team names are called and why announcers etc. refer to DC in that fashion...however, people on the street in Norfolk, VA. don't generally go around saying "Washington."

I usually say DC but I will also say Washington. If I'm talking about a city/town in the state of WA then I usually just say Washington (like that recent school shooting happened in Marysville, Washington) but if I'm just talking about the state itself I usually say Washington state. Kind of like New York State or upstate New York to refer to whatever's not the city area. It's the clear distinction. I think it's because I have no connection to the state of Washington since I live on the East Coast. It does depend on the context though. I don't always say the exact same thing. But when someone says Washington, I think first of DC. Sorry West Coasters

I'm born and raised in CA, and lived all of my life in the west, except for 5 years in TN. I always think of the state when someone says Washington, unless it's obviously about DC, as in the President said in Washington today...

I will say Washington state depending on who I'm talking to, to be clear. I don't think I've ever referred to Washington DC as just DC. I guess I kind of don't feel like I have the right to, as if only "locals" get to call it DC ha ha.

I think of Washington, DC the seat of politics, not the entire city if that makes sense.

I'm in California. Almost all of the time when I hear someone say they live in Washington or have family in Washington (as I do!), they mean the state. So that's what I think of first.

I would only think of Washington, DC if the context made it clear that something political was being mentioned. And I would always refer to the city as Washington, DC.
