I'm trying to make this sound clear, but any examples of major American cities that influence a ton of land not too far away? Like Atlanta, for example. Atlanta would influence the state of Alabama in some ways. I'm sure most people in Alabama pull for Atlanta sports teams, or possibly move to Atlanta after college. Same situation with Boston and all those little New England states up there, or maybe Denver would influence a state like Wyoming. I imagine Washington, DC influences Virginia. I don't know, am I making sense? And I'm really talking about MAJOR cities.
Denver influences much of the Rocky Mountain region, an area extending across Colorado, into the northern third of New Mexico, the western thirds of Kansas and Nebraska, and the eastern two thirds of Wyoming.

Actually no, more people in Alabama are Saints fans, even in Birmingham there are more Saints fans than dirty bird fans.
New Orleans isn't a MAJOR city like you are asking about but it influences a huge area culturally. Houston, all of Louisiana, most of Mississippi, southern Alabama and the Florida panhandle are all culturally influenced by New Orleans and Louisiana cultural traits.
How about a thread of smaller cities that influence an abnormally large area for their size?
Des Moines, Boise and Albuquerque come to mind.
