Like for example
North and south dakota could be one state

Nevada could become part of california

South carolina and georgia (I found north carolina to be too progressive to be similar to south carolina)

all of new england

any more suggestions?

Arizona + New Mexico
Can anyone see or envision New Mexico as being a better pairing with Colorado instead of Arizona? Or maybe it's just me.

It is not just you. I agree New Mexico fits better with Colorado. I also think Colorado pairs better with NM than it does with Utah. Colorado and Utah share similarities in nature but are very different places once people are considered.

Agree with the above saying that NM and CO pair better. Idaho and UT pair well, and maybe you could include Arizona there too.

I feel that while NH and Maine could merge, and maybe MA and VT, VT and NH are actually terrible merge candidates, as politically they're on very different ends of the spectrum.

But I actually think we need a couple dozen more states, not less.

Say what? Isn't the ultimate goal to be UNITED?

I think it depends on which part of which state sometimes, too. Like most of CA is not like Nevada, and the state governments are pretty different. You could probably merge the high desert in CA with Nevada, and that might work.

I think the same is true for WA, OR and ID. Some parts are similar and some are not. WA and OR are much more similar IMO than CA and NV.

Interesting thread OP!

E pluribus unum

We don't have pluribus yet, just 50.
