Hey all! New to this forum, thought id make an account and ask. Im leaving sacramento california to the east coast to start new and start community college and work, im undecided to what city or state to look into. i would like mostly regular 4 seasons, not too much extremes. Most important thing is that is is coastal or within an hour or two drive to the coast. but must have a river or beautiful lake very close by, for hiking/ bicycling /fishing etc. Overall a smallish town near the coast, by a lake or river and close to a decent college. Thanks for any help or ideas you guys!
Given your desire for not a lot of extremes and four seasons I would recommend checking out the Hampton Roads area of SE Virginia, in particular the city of Chesapeake which fits your criteria pretty well.
Given the criteria you describe -- I'd recommend some place like Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, NC; 2.5 hours from the beach, 3 unique and different sized cities all close to one another, affordable, with 4 seasons but mild and shorter Winters than anyplace North (though the Summers are also hotter and more humid). I'm planning to move there myself come 2015. Oh, and there are MANY great colleges and universities.

There are a bunch of communities like that in the region. What else are you looking for, that will set some communities apart from others?
