So this morning I went on the FBI website and saw they just released the annual Uniform Crime Report for 2013. It shows that crime overall is declining - FBI — Crime Statistics for 2013 Released

Some interesting metros in the top ten in safety, such as Hartford, Rochester, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. This probably goes against conventional wisdom as they seem to be seen as gritty and more crime prone. At the other end, I'm surprised to see Nashville so violent. The murders are low (12th best, actually) so it must be scoring very poorly in terms of assaults, rapes, and other violent crimes.

I always find it strange that the Boston area always rates poorly in violent crime, but has one of the lowest murder rates.

Murder Rates Nationally and By State | Death Penalty Information Center

The numbers on my chart aren't quite aligning, but this is the murder rate per/100,000 for Massachusetts from 1996-2012. The already low numbers (for the US) went up a bit from 2004 to about 2010, but they have since gone down.

But your obvious attempt at trying to show that Massachusetts' tough gun laws have anything to do with my previous state falls flat. If you look at the original data on this thread, you'll see that the murder rate in the Boston area is the second lowest of the 49 largest metro areas in the country. Despite having this relatively low murder rate, the violent crime rate in the Boston area is 21st out of 47. I can only conclude that Bostonians love a good street fight, but at the end nobody's ending up dead. This is actually a good case of gun control because it shows that Bostonians are just as violent as other metro areas, but their access to guns is limited so they are less likely to shoot each other. Just a hypothesis.

crime in the US has been declining for over a decade now, I believe there was a small surge around 2012 but it quickly went back down.

Quite positive!!!

now you just need to ban guns and you'll have a marvelous peaceful nation
