However he is most likely wrong.

The origin of the word probably has to do with the conquered Dutch in the New York and Connecticut areas. Whether it started as an insult for the Dutch settlers by the English or an insult by the Dutch for the English is not certain. Since there were BOTH Dutch and English settlers in New York, so in either case early New Yorkers were considered 'Yankees".

Since the British call all Americans Yankees, it stands to reason their former colonies like Jamaica do too.

From there it might spread to some of the former Spanish and French colonies. I am not sure about that.
