Well I might be the only one lol. Maybe because I no longer live in the city or maybe it simply is because I am into geography, but I think of New York State first. Of course when I used to live in Queens, I would think of NYC first.

"The city" is New York City. New York is New York State.

When I hear "New York" I think of upstate NY.

1. I have seen quite a bit of upstate NY, and I like it a lot.

2. I have never been to NYC, and it's not really on my radar or my to-do list. I enjoy visiting cities, but my first love is natural beauty, which makes upstate NY (and many other places across the U.S.) a more likely destination.

I think many people when they hear NY assume you are talking about NYC rather than NY state if they haven't any connection to the NYC or NY State areas.

Anyway, if you're downstate, you don't say New York for New York City. It's just "the city". New York is the state.
The vast, vast majority of the country/world instantly go to the city. I like the state just fine, but there are other states that offer up exactly what you get outside NYC; however, there is only one NYC.

It may depend on what you are looking for in the state outside of NYC too.

As someone from Upstate, I think of the state.

NYC is "the city."

and id bet 10/10 times anyone else from Upstate thinks of the state when someone says "New York" as well.

I don't think many, if any other states can offer up the kind of lake effect snow New York gets. Especially south of Buffalo, Watertown and around Syracuse. Definitely the snow belt.

My vote went to the third option. As someone mentioned earlier in this thread, I almost always ask what part of NY instead of thinking or assuming the city.

New York as a whole is a great state with much to offer.

Without context - the city.

However, if people say that they're from New York, there's a fairly good chance that they're not from the city or nearby areas. So in that case, I'd probably assume the state.
