Going off the Washington thread...

Do you think of New York City first?

Or do you think of New York State?

I think New York City immediately, as in my experience, most people from Upstate preface where there from, i.e. "I'm from Rochester, Buffalo, etc.

It's 12 million. Regardless, there are a large number of people familiar with the whole state that think of the entire state.

Anyway, if you're downstate, you don't say New York for New York City. It's just "the city". New York is the state.

Most people still think of the city. So I don't understand what you're trying to argue here.

Obviously the city. If you reference the state, you say "NY State". But if you say "NY" you are obviously referring to the city (unless you actually live upstate).

Exactly. When someone says "New York" I ask, "Where in New York?".

Most people who live in the boroughs mention the borough, "I'm From Queens.", "I'm from Brooklyn." or if they are from downstate, they'll often say the county, "I'm from Westchester.", "I'm from Rockland."

Upstaters, in my experience, will say they are from "New York.", but some very insecure ones who would rather die than be thought of as from New York City will say "I'm from upstate New York." and then blather on about how much snow they shovel, how many deer they have shot or something else that proves what a rural badass they are compared to scarf wearing, latte sippers from the city :-)
