It was a regular AFB just with those units, but that's neither here or there. I'm also familiar with Desert Storm, as I had a sibling ironically involved in that conflict.

Perhaps a place in Utah could work and there is Hill AFB in the Layton, Clearfield area in between Ogden and Salt Lake City. I know that it isn't necessary, but it may help the story.

Okay, I've narrowed down to three locations:

Ozette Lake, Clallam County, Washington
SE side of Lake Pend Oreille, Bonner County, Idaho
NE side of Polson, Flathead Lake, Montana

Would be two (was going to cut the Washington site), but I'm still trying to decide whether I want an ocean site or not. Anyone have experience with these areas?

Ozette will work if your only industry is forestry, your place gets tons (I mean tons) of rain, and tourists come to town because they think a well known movie (Twilight) was filmed there. This is Economy Sucks, USA.

Lake Pend Oreille (one of my favorite places in the world) will work if you don't mind being fairly close to Coeur d'Alene's sprawl. This area is very popular with conservative former-Californians.

Polson will work if you don't need as many trees, and don't mind tons (I mean tons) of tourists passing through during the summer. The biome is high desert/steppe, with an obviously beautiful lake and mountains beyond it.

Thanks! This really helps. Though Pend Oreille will now be playing a later part in the story, I think the Polson area must be the ideal location.

I actually didn't mention this cause I haven't been thinking about it, but a heavy stream of tourists actually plays into the story very well. While that small ridge between Polson and Condon probably isn't loaded with gold/silver/copper/coal/etc, I suppose one can always use their imagination for the mining part, and out of all the options I've gone through, Flathead appears to be the largest lake.

So, thanks to everyone for all the ideas/advice. And maybe you'll catch me around the Ohio forum giving some of my own
