Seriously? How does Erie fit the bill? OP's first criteria was mountains!
Surprisingly I would agree that Chattanooga could be an intriguing option, though you'd have to brush up on southern culture to make it authentic. Personally, I imagine the book set somewhere in the NW. There are a lot of places that fit the bill (water, mountains, forest, farming) within a reasonable distance of Seattle or Portland. Actually, where I live right now (Bellingham, WA) sounds like a place that could be in your novel- in between Seattle and Vancouver. Take a look-
Yeah... I agree about the Chattanooga part. It's not necessarily an obvious choice but it fits all of the needs and really has an interesting history. I don't know much about what the book will be about but I hope the OP will share it with us when he's finished. I imagine the story being able to go in a lot of directions if based in Chattanooga.
For the OP, here are a few things to check out that you may not be aware of. Kind of interesting.
Plattsburgh NY or Burlington VT may fit much of what you are looking for. There are towns around Lake Champlain like Moriah and Elizabethtown that were known for iron mining and are within close proximity to the Adirondacks on the NY side.

Definitely a beautiful spot...the only problem is, those mountains are a little too much mountain for my purposes . I may end up incorporating the area in some way though.
And about my story...that's a whole story in itself. It actually takes three books to tell. I'll try to give you guys a brief idea though.
It starts with a Scottish herdsman, Angus Carmichael, and his brother moving to America just before the civil war. Angus becomes an overseer (the kindest there ever was) on a Virginia plantation, and his brother buys a small farm. Once Virginia secedes, they join the Virginia militia. After his brother is killed at Bull Run, Angus resigns from the army and heads west with a wagon train (the one point of the story where it gets a little tricky working NY or Tennessee in as the town, but it may change at some point).
So the wagon train left too late in the year, and a blizzard strands them in the Rockies. After wandering around, they stumble on a large native settlement which is mostly Cherokee, but this particular Cherokee tribe has given assylum to natives of many other tribes: those kicked out of war tribes like the Apache, for rejecting a bloodthirsty lifestyle and those, like the Mohawk, who are all that remains of their tribe. Long story short, the natives become friends with the members of the wagon train and help them build shelters for the winter. Come spring, the pioneers see the beauty and fertility of the area and they build a town right there, which becomes Eagleton.
And that's only the preface. The main chunk of story revolves around a great-great-great-great-great grandson of Angus, whose name is Benjamin. Ben's father was a high-ranking Air Force officer during Desert Storm, but was honorably discharged prior to Ben's birth, then drafted to the Marines after 9/11, in which he was KIA a few years later. Meanwhile, Ben's mom died around 9/11 due to terminal illness, so Ben ends up adopted by his Dad's childhood & Air Force buddy.
Late into the story, Ben becomes a war hero, America is invaded by a terrorist army, a second Civil War takes place, and Ben ends up the leader of the resulting "New Republic". In the end, the end happens (that is, the end of the world in a similar fashion to the Left Behind Series).
Also, Plattsburgh actually had an active regular Air Force Base until 1995. So, that may be something to consider.
Uh, not really, actually. Plattsburgh's base was a bomber and tanker base. And also, Desert Storm happened in Iraq, so Eagleton's location doesn't need to be near a military installation.
