Lincoln has a "surprisingly large population" because it has no suburbs.
You can see this looking at the overhead map. Almost everything outside of city limits is farmland.
Regardless, the city doesn't seem particularly urban to me. Looks like mostly detatched single-family housing outside of downtown. The Walkscore for the city sucks too (40), with almost nothing outside of Downtown and the university area deemed walkable.
