They have "fake tan" for Jersey, but that stereotype could just as easily have come from my fellow Americans. There are some really strange perceptions of NJ out there, mostly based on dumb TV shows and movies.
One of the workers at my local CVS moved here from Washington State when her husband was transferred. Said she was shocked that NJ is so green. Then again, she also said she was in South Carolina and expected that to be a desert, so I think she may just be geographically challenged all around.
they fairly know about the US in a stereotypical way, you ask Americans to do the same to a map of the UK and most would probably have no idea other than london, the queen, tea.

I don't, but I can name all of Henry VIII's wives, how they died, and their childrens' names. I can also tell you where Doc Martin was filmed, and the actual name of the castle used as the Downton Abbey set.
Breaking Bad has done a great disservice to New Mexico. If you know anything about the state, you know that meth here is of marginal popularity at best. In New Mexico, heroin is king. When we will ever be recognized as a the heroin paradise we are?
This actually shows a better understanding of American geography than most Americans probably have. Of course, these are journalists and not the general public, but still.
