With all the protests happening recently, it made me think of this question. What is the main space in your city for public gatherings, events, concerts, protests, etc? For example, in Cleveland it is Public Square. That is where festivals are held, the Cleveland Orchestra plays its annual 4th of July concert there, it's home to the city's Christmas tree, and most protests will take place there. It is also the hub of the region's bus and rail system. What are the equivalents in other cities?
New York City = Times Square, Rockefeller Center Plaza, or Sheep Meadow in Central Park, depending on the event
Chicago = Grant Park (Taste of Chicago, Obama post-election night speech in 2008, riots at '68 Democratic convention)
San Francisco = Civic Center (Isn't that where the parade for the MLB Champion Giants ended this fall?)
Washington DC= The Mall (Just about every big public concert and protest march in DC since time began)
I believe that only Times Square, however, can be considered in any way a transit hub out of these four.
For DC, I would also add in the traffic circle island/park in the same neighborhood it's named after, Dupont Circle and also to some extent Gallery Place in Chinatown.
Portland - Pioneer Courthouse Square is the transit & retail hub, where the city's Christmas tree is. Waterfront Park is for events that draw large crowds - the Rose Festival, Obama rallies, the Blues festival, Gay Pride, Cinco de Mayo, etc.
probably South Broad Street for Philadelphia as more the impromptu meeting place or the parkway for more scheduled events
